Todd Haynes has announced plans to direct his first documentary feature, with the subject matter being the seminal rock group Velvet Underground.

Killer Films and Universal Music Group are teaming for the project which comes a full fifty years after the release of the band’s debut album The Velvet Underground & Nico. Christine Vachon and David Blackman will produce.

Haynes’ project is currently untitled and will rely on “a rich culture of experimental film, a vernacular we have lost and we don’t have, [and that] we increasingly get further removed from” he tells Variety.

Haynes aims to include interviews with the surviving members of the band and the contemporary 1960s artistic movement.

Haynesis also preparing a limited historical bio-series for Amazon. Who is the subject he wouldn’t reveal, other than saying it is “an intensely important figure of immense historical and cultural influence”.
