First announced last summer, Cartoon Network is moving forward with an animated reboot of their iconic animated series, “The Powerpuff Girls.” Although the girls themselves won’t be back on the small screen until 2016, Cartoon Network has today revealed that Nick Jennings (“Adventure Time”) will be serving as executive producer!

“As the original ambassador of girl power, ‘The Powerpuff Girls’ brand continues to resonate with people of all ages,” said Pete Yoder, vice president of consumer products for North America, Cartoon Network Enterprises in a statement last summer. “[T]here is tremendous excitement around introducing Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup to a new generation.”

“The original ‘Powerpuff Girls’ was a franchise phenomenon for Cartoon Network, paving the way for a new generation of innovative storytellers and enthusiastic fans worldwide,” added Rob Sorcher, chief content officer, Cartoon Network. “We are calling these girls back into action based upon an overwhelming demand for sugar, spice and Chemical X.”

One of the network’s most enduring original series, “The Powerpuff Girls” was created by Craig McCracken and debuted on Cartoon Network in 1998, earned two Emmy Awards, five nominations and countless animation honors throughout its 78-episode run. The series centers on three sugar-coated superheroes — Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup — whose mission in life alternates between going to school, fighting crime, winning at hopscotch and saving the world before bedtime.

In addition to his work on “Adventure Time,” Jennings’ animation credits include work on “SpongeBob SquarePants” and “Rocko’s Modern Life.”
