Microsoft Picks Satya Nadella as CEO – Bill Gates Moves into a New Role

Satya NadellaMicrosoft today announced the appointment of Satya Nadella  (pronounced sa-TEE-ya na-DELL-uh) as chief executive officer of the company.

Nadella replaces Steve Ballmer, who will remain on the board of directors. Nadella has been with Microsoft for 22 years and held various roles during his tenure.

“Microsoft is one of those rare companies to have truly revolutionized the world through technology, and I couldn’t be more honored to have been chosen to lead the company,” Nadella said. “The opportunity ahead for Microsoft is vast, but to seize it, we must focus clearly, move faster and continue to transform. A big part of my job is to accelerate our ability to bring innovative products to our customers more quickly.”

Microsoft also announced that Bill Gates, previously chairman of the board of directors, will take on a new role as Founder and Technology Advisor. He will devote more time to the company and assist Nadella in shaping future products. Nadella is CEO effective immediately.

John Thompson has been names Chairmen of Microsoft.  Thompson was the lead independent director heading the board’s search for a new chief executive officer, resulting in the appointment of Microsoft insider Satya Nadella to replace Steve Ballmer
