LG has lowered the cost of its curved OLED television in the United States, in an attempt to improve demand for OLED devices. The 55EA9800, a curved OLED Full HD television that went on sale in the US through Best Buy in July last year, is being cut down in price from the initial $15,000 down to $8,000, with an extra $1,000 rebate bringing the price down to $7,000.
Weighing 37.5 pounds and measuring 4.3mm (0.17-inches) thick, the 55-inch television is concave in design in order to minimize distortion at the edges of the screen when viewed from straight ahead. The 55EA9800 uses a four-color pixel system that employs an extra white sub-pixel for fine-tuning colors, something which helped the display gain a THX Display Certification.

“Our goal is to grow the US OLED TV market by making OLED TVs more affordable. And this is another step in that direction,” said LG Electronics USA CEO William Cho, according to CNet. The company has also confirmed the television will be available until the middle of this year, despite the introduction of other similar televisions the company launched at CES last month, including a 77-inch Ultra HD model.
Earlier this year, LG advised it would be expanding its production of OLED panels, after completing new television plants in Brazil, Poland, China, and Thailand. A new facility in Mexico for the creation of OLED TVs destined for the US market is expected to start production sometime this year.
