Jaguar Looks to Beef Up XF Line-up With New XF Sportbrake

With U.S. sales of sedans fading the time may be right for the return of the wagon. At least two automakers are betting new wagons will appeal to buyers looking for more space for their stuff than a sedan can offer, but who don’t want to buy a high-riding SUV or crossover.

Jaguar said Tuesday that the XF Sportbrake, a four-door wagon with a large, sloping glass roof, will join its U.S. lineup this year. The British automaker showed a teaser shot of the car in the run-up to England’s Wimbledon tennis championships, where Jaguar is the official car partner of the tournament. The XF Sportbrake is the first Jaguar wagon to be offered in the U.S. since the short-lived X-Type was available from 2005-07.

Jaguar is an official partner of the Wimbledon 2017 Championship, and it teased a silhouette of the XF Sportbrake on the world-famous center court grass. The XF Sportbrake is closest in size — and likely price — to the Mercedes-Benz E-class wagon. Other luxury wagons include the Audi A4 Allroad, BMW 3 series and Volvo V60 and V90.

Buick has confirmed that it will offer a wagon version of the redesigned Regal called the TourX. Jaguar has not announced pricing or powertrains, but the XF Sportbrake is likely to be equipped with the same engines and transmissions as the sedan versions, which include a four-cylinder diesel engine and a supercharged V-6.
