Google today announced new Google Play Services for location-based services that Android developers can integrate into their apps during Google I/O, .

A new Geofencing API allows apps to be notified and take action when the user enters or leaves specified areas. An Activity Recognition API automatically recognizes certain activities such as walking, running, and driving, and gives that information to relevant apps. Finally, a new Fused Location API allows apps to determine the phone’s geographic location in ways that are faster, more accurate and use much less battery life.

As these APIs are Google Play Services, they are updated independently of the Android OS version.
