Gears of War’s third iteration has sold three million copies, making it the biggest game of the year so far.
“Gears of War was the first killer app for Xbox 360, and the series has continued to contribute directly to the overall success of the platform ever since,” said Microsoft Corporate Vice President Phil Spencer, in a statement. “Gears of War 3 kicked off the biggest holiday in Xbox history with a bang last week, setting the standard for the kinds of amazing, action-packed experiences gamers should expect on Xbox 360 this year.”
The one-week tally is impressive, although one of its top rivals in the games space, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, is not far off. So far, Gears of War 3 is exclusive to the Xbox 360 platform, while rivals like Call of Duty were written for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, among others.
