Facebook today announced Messenger Lite, a pared-down version of its instant messaging app for emerging markets.

The app is meant for entry-level and mid-range Android handsets that operate on slower cellular networks. Messenger Lite includes basic services, such as messaging and the ability to send photos, links, and stickers. The app allows users to interact with the full version of Messenger and Messenger Lite. Facebook says the app requires only 10 MB of space on Android devices in order to help people maximize their storage.

Facebook is making Messenger Lite available in Kenya, Tunisia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Venezuela first, with other markets to follow.
