Diane Lane has signed on for a role in the upcoming Matthew Weiner Amazon series The Romanoffs. The new series will consist of eight hour-long episodes, each of which will tell a standalone story with no recurring plot elements or actors. Each episode will tell the stories of people in contemporary times who believe they are descendants of the imperial family that ruled Russia from 1613 until the Bolsheviks seized power in 1917.

The role will mark a rare TV appearance for Lane, who has primarily worked in film throughout her career. She is best known recently for her roles in the DC films Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman, and the upcoming Justice League. She also starred in the 2002 drama Unfaitful, for which she was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress. Other prominent roles include Under the Tuscan Sun, Trumbo, and The Perfect Storm.

She joins previously announced cast members such as Christina Hendricks, John Slattery, Isabelle Huppert, Corey Stoll, Andrew Rannells, Paul Reiser, and Amanda Peet among others.

The Romanoffs will be directed entirely by Weiner, who also serves as an executive producer and writer, with Semi Chellas also writing and executive producing. Kriss Turner Towner, Blake McCormick. and Kathy Ciric co-executive produce. The Weinstein Company was originally set to produce in association with Amazon Studios, but Amazon decided to move forward without TWC in the wake of mounting allegations of sexual misconduct and assault against Harvey Weinstein. The series will debut on Prime Video next year.
