Code Black to Return for a Third Season on CBS

Code Black won’t be closing its hospital doors anytime soon. CBS has renewed the medical drama for Season 3. An episode count (the first two seasons averaged 17 episodes) was not immediately made available.

The renewal comes after the Marcia Gay Harden drama underwent a massive revamp in Season 2, adding Rob Lowe as maverick doc Ethan Willis, a seasoned combat surgeon coming off a stint in war-ravaged Afghanistan. Lowe’s debut last September reached 6.4 million total viewers and a 1.2 demo rating, but those ratings didn’t hold. February’s Season 2 finale drew a 0.9 in the demo, down 25 percent from the season opener, putting the show heavily on the bubble.

As a whole, Season 2 averaged a 1.0 rating, besting the already renewed Madam Secretary and Elementary, plus five other CBS dramas.
