BMW X4BMW, has beat their competition to the punch again by launching a second coupe-like crossover, the all-new 2015 X4, which has been revealed in full ahead of its world debut at the 2014 New York Auto Show next month.

The vehicle is based on the same underpinnings as the X3, just as the larger X6 shares its underpinnings with the X5, and it is being manufactured at BMW’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Targeting style and performance rather than utility, the X4 will go up against similar models in the small crossover segment such as the Range Rover Evoque and latest Porsche Macan and Lincoln MKC.

The body has four doors though is shaped like a coupe. Compared to the X3, the X4 is positioned as the sportier option and thus features a more planted stance: at 184.3 inches in length, it is 0.6 inches longer than the X3, but is also 1.5 inches lower (height is 63.9 inches). Despite the low roof, BMW has managed to squeeze three seats in the rear, though we suspect things will be a bit tight there.

Engine offerings in the U.S. mirror those of the latest 2015 BMW X3, which means a base turbocharged 2.0-liter four rated at 240 horsepower, found in an X4 xDrive28 model, and a more powerful turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six model good for 300 horsepower, found in an X4 xDrive35i. Unlike the X3, which offers a rear-wheel-drive option, all X4’s will come with xDrive all-wheel drive as standard.

An eight-speed automatic with paddle shifters is fitted as standard across the range, too. BMW says X4 xDrive28i owners can expect 0-60 mph acceleration in 6.0 seconds while the X4 xDrive35i should do the feat in just 5.2 seconds.

BMW isn’t expected to launch a dedicated M version of the new X4, though there might be a sportier M Performance model launched with some healthy upgrades. In the meantime, those customers looking to add some sport to their X4 can opt for an M Sport package which adds a more aggressive body kit and some M goodies. These include custom door sills, light alloy wheels and a leather steering wheel.

The 2015 BMW X4 hits showrooms this spring, priced from $45,625 for the X4 xDrive28 and $48,925 for the X4 xDrive35i. Both prices include destination charges.
