Spiderweb Software have begun a new fantasy role-playing game in a similar “retro” style. In Avadon: The Black Fortress, players are agents of Avadon, a land under threat from a collection of various enemies: barbarians, fading empires, titans and monsters. The game features four different character classes and a unique, enormous world to explore.

Players gain influence inside the fortress, and battle a conspiracy full of political intrigue to save their people. Spies and warriors can be sent to keep potential enemies contained, dungeons can be explored, magical artifacts can be obtained, assassins may try to eliminate the player, and they must discover the unknown enemy who is conspiring to unite all the various foes of Avadon into a single force. The ending can change depending on a player’s actions, creating plenty of replay value.

Avadon: The Black Fortress requires a Mac running OS X 10.4 or later on a 1.6GHz processor or better. A Windows version of the game is also available, along with a demo for either platform. The games sells for $25 (download only), or a CD version can be ordered for an additional $6. A hint book is also available.
