Warner Bros. Pictures has, according to The Hollywood Reporter, landed the stunning Amber Heard (The Danish Girl, Magic Mike XXL) to take the female lead in director James Wan’s upcoming Aquaman movie. She will be playing the character Mera, Aquaman’s love interest and eventual Queen of Atlantis, who first appeared in the comics in 1963. Mera will make her screen debut in Zack Snyder’s Justice League Part One, which begins shooting in April.

amberrightJason Momoa will be headlining the Aquaman feature film, which is based on the classic DC Comics sea dwelling superhero. Aquaman made his first comic book appearance way back in 1941’s “More Fun Comics” #73. Created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger, Aquaman went on to become a founding member of the Justice League of America two decades later. Until now, the character has never made it to the big screen. Aquaman’s sole live-action appearance was as a teen on the WB’s “Smallville.” The character was planned for a spinoff series, “Mercy Reef,” but the property never made it beyond the pilot stage.

Before appearing in his solo film, Momoa’s Aquaman will make his big screen debut in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, set to hit theaters on March 25, 2016. He’ll be back for Justice League Part One, arriving November 10, 2017. Aquaman then hits the following summer on July 27, 2018 with Justice League Part Two coming to theaters on June 14, 2019.

The studio is developing two scripts for the Aquaman solo movie simultaneously, with Kurt Johnstad (300, 300: Rise of an Empire) penning one and David Leslie Johnson (Wrath of the Titans, The Conjuring 2) the other. Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder and Zack Snyder are serving as producers.

Heard will next be seen opposite Cara Delevingne, Theo James and her husband Johnny Depp in the mystery thriller London Fields.
