Apple has launched a new area on the iTunes Store, simply dubbed Free on iTunes. The section highlights free song and TV downloads. Some musical examples include singles from Nude Beach, Machine Head, Purity Ring, and Washed Out. TV content includes episodes from Backstrom, 12 Monkeys, The Musketeers, and other shows.
The addition appears to be a replacement and expansion of the recently-ended Single of the Week. That was one of iTunes’ longest-running promotions, dating back to 2004, which along with the end of the 12 Days of Christmas campaign fueled worries that Apple was completely killing off free iTunes content apart from one-off efforts. It remains to be see though if Free on iTunes will be updated on a weekly basis, or more or less frequently.
