Apple Logo BlueApple has purchased a company called Semetrics for an undisclosed sum.

Semetrics, which is based in the U.K., can track online music sales as well as illegal downloads and buzz across social media. Semetrics’ Musicmetric service lets artists gauge how well their songs are performing within services such as Spotify, for example.

Apple is believed to be preparing a music streaming service to compete with Spotify, Pandora, and others, and Semetrics can help provide it with the data needed to more effectively run that service.
