Samsung won a reversal of a $120 million patent-related fine thanks to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C.
The court found the iPhone’s slide-to-unlock and auto-correct patents invalid. Moreover, the court said Apple was guilty of infringing on one of Samsung’s patents. Samsung was initially found to violate the stated Apple patents back in 2014 and Apple was awarded $120 million in damages (far less than the iPhone-maker wanted).
Earlier this year, a judge agreed with Apple’s position that the fine wasn’t enough and went so far as to ban some older Samsung phones from being imported to the U.S. The appeals court’s decision today reverses the initial verdict. The court didn’t say how the reversal will impact the import ban.
Neither Apple nor Samsung provided immediate comment on the ruling.
