Google today made Android Auto, its platform for connecting to car-based infotainment systems, available as an app in the Play Store. With the app and compatible car, Android smartphone owners will be able to access navigation, calls and messaging, Google Search, and their music through the car’s screen rather than their phone.

Android Auto competes with Apple’s CarPlay and the open MirrorLink standard. It is available in select head units from Pioneer and will soon be available in select cars. The app is free to download, but requires Android 5.0 and up.

Google also created a section in the Play Store highlighting third-party apps that are compatible with Android Auto.
