Two news pairs of over-the-ear headphones were announced by 808 Audio today, taking a new approach to the ear cup design. The Performer Headphones–released in wired and Bluetooth models–use ear cup suspension technology in an attempt to give users a better fit during long play sessions or in professional audio applications like DJ sets.

The Performer Headphones use a suspension system that was inspired by a studio microphone mount, letting users adjust the cups for “the best possible ergonomic fit.” The design also gives a better seal against the head and better noise isolation according to 808 Audio. The Voxx International-owned company turned to sound engineers and DJs to help produce the Performers, with electronic dance music (EDM) DJ and producer Audien picking features that would work for professionals and every day listeners.

“The 808 Performer Headphones have such a simple yet sexy silhouette with unmatched comfort. As a DJ, that’s a hard-to-find combo,” said Audien. “A successful DJ set requires both tastefully chosen music and exhilarating physical energy to inspire the crowd. These headphones allow for both comfortable movement, and sonic excellence, which is only further complimented by their enticing aesthetic appeal.”

Materials and components for the 808 Performer Headphones look to compete with expensive pro-audio options. The frames of the headphones are made from spring steel, with sweat-resistant silicone padding in the headband. The ear cups can also move 90 degrees vertically, keeping the professional DJ in mind with the design. Padding on the ear cups is wrapped in leather for improved comfort.

Both models of the bass-tuned headphones feature 40mm drivers, and a detachable braided cable with track controls and a microphone. The Bluetooth model comes with on-ear controls for play/pause and dual purpose controls for track control and volume. The Performer BT also has a built-in microphone for hands-free calling, along with a battery that lasts up to 15 hours.

The Performer Headphones will be on display at the Consumer Electronics Expo 2015 in Las Vegas starting January 6. Both versions of 808 Audio’s Performer Headphones are expected March 2015, with pricing set at $100 for the Bluetooth model or $80 for the wired version.
