Smith Micro Software has released Stuffit Deluxe 2011 for Mac. From the feature list it appears Smith Micro has listened to customers and reviewers with the improvements made to the product line. On the Mac side it features a 64-bit optimized Stuffit Engine, improved compression, Stuffit Destinations for easy file transfers, plug-ins for Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Office, and a new licensing plan that includes a free Windows license.
The new release has been redesigned to strip out complexity, using workflows (AKA “Stuffit Destinations”) to make sending files to favorite destinations a one-button task. Files can be compressed and sent via e-mail, FTP, a MobileMe member’s iDisk, store to a local harddrive, local network drive, or burned to a CD/DVD.
The program’s SmartSend feature automatically e-mails small files as compressed attachments, while large files are automatically uploaded to a secure website for easy download. You can secure your compressed data with password protection and encryption with strong 512-bit encryption for SITX archives and AES 256-bit encryption for Zip files.
There are new options for audio and image compression. Plug-ins are included for iPhoto and Aperture. In addition, the new version can create disk image (DMG) files directly from the Magic Menu button. Since the Stuffit Engine core is now 64-bit means faster performance overall, especially on mchines with 8GB or more of RAM.
Cloud Storage
The company is also offering its own subscription-based secure cloud storeage service option, called SendStuffNow (formerly called StuffIt Connect). SendStuffNow allows users to store and share up to 2GB of files. When you send a file with the service the e-mail recipients get a simple URL to click with no signup or software to install to re the file(s). The program comes with a free three-month premium SendStuffNow account trial valued at $30.
As a bonus, also included is an installer for Stuffit Deluxe for Windows 2010 for customers who also have PCs or use virtualized Windows on their Macs. Users can mix and match up to three installations of either the Mac or Windows versions.
Browse Archive Contents Like Any Folder
The archive manager gives you easy browse access to the contents of your archives. Browse the contents of StuffIt X, Zip, Tar, and RAR archives, including encoded archives, and compressed Tar archives (tarballs).
