58 Technology Firms Fighting Trump’s Revised Travel Ban

58 technology firms have stepped up their fight against Trump’s  revised travel ban according to CNN.

All the firms signed on to a friend-of-the-court legal brief filed early Wednesday morning in response to a suit filed by the state of Hawaii asking for a restraining order against President Trump’s second attempt at a temporary travel ban targeting majority-Muslim countries.

The Hawaii suit seeks to block the revised ban, arguing it will disrupt families, harm its Muslim population, tourism and foreign students and is “antithetical to Hawaii’s state identity and spirit.

The first ban barred citizens of Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen for 90 days, all refugees for 120 days and Syrian citizens indefinitely.

The reviewed rule, which was signed March 6, temporarily bars citizens of Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Syria for 90 days and all refugees for 120 days.

The revised executive order was to go into effect Thursday, but a federal judge in Hawaii late Wednesday issued a nationwide ban on the retooled order.

Firms including Square, Twilio, Shutterstock, Airbnb, Lyft, Kickstarter and Pinterest, had all filed a new legal brief in support of a lawsuit against the ban in Hawaii.

Last month, 97 companies, including Apple, Airbnb, Facebook, Google, Intel, Netflix, Snap, Uber Technologies and Zynga, filed an impassioned legal brief condemning the President’s original executive order on immigration.

Per a report by the Independent tech giants Google, Apple have not join the fight on the new ban. Both firms filed a brief opposing the first ban in the  challenge brought by Washington state, which is ongoing.

The White House says the ban has been tailored to survive legal scrutiny. In court filings, the Department of Justice argues that the president has broad powers to protect the nation.
