Zola Budd and Mary Decker, the track stars who literally had a nasty run-in at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, are set to reunite for the first time in more than 30 years for pay-TV operator Sky’s original documentary feature “The Fall.”
The 90-minute feature will premiere in London movie theater Picturehouse Central on July 27, with preview screenings on July 28 before unspooling nationwide on July 29, when it will also air on pay-TV channel Sky Atlantic. “Hillsborough” helmer Daniel Gordon directed the film, which is produced by Passion Pictures’ John Battsek (“One Day in September,” “Hillsborough”).
“The Fall” focuses on the rise of world-record-breaking American runner Decker and of Budd, a South African who was persuaded to adopt British nationality as a teenager to avoid the international sporting boycott of her native land because of apartheid. Budd, famous for running barefoot, and Decker, favored to win gold in the 3,000-meter women’s race at the 1984 Olympics, captivated the world with their stories.
But the two collided on the track during the race. Decker was unable to complete the race, and Budd failed to win a medal. A media frenzy ensued, and the reason for the fall was hotly debated.
“I knew making this film would be opening up the black box in my mind which I haven’t opened since that day,” said Budd. “I thought it was time.”
Decker said: “I still think about that race every day. Making this film has been cathartic.”
