WD has announced the launch of My Passport Wireless drive which is a Wi-fi enabled external hard drive to let you save, access and stream digital content wirelessly to your mobile devices. It uses the WD My Cloud mobile app to make this possible. Pricing for My Passport Wireless is around Rs 11,000 for 500 GB and approximately Rs 13,000 for 1 TB drive. It is expected to be available in India from the last week of October.

One of the major differentiating factor of the WD My Passport Wireless is the presence of a dedicated SD card slot

Wi-fi connected hard drives isn’t a new concept, but WD has differentiated itself by snapping on a dedicated SD card slot on the drive itself. This can be particularly handy to photographers on long shooting assignments. With the SD card slot, you can transfer contents of the SD card quickly onto your WD My Passport Wireless drive. Apart from this, with the help of integrated FTP, the drive can connect to compatible wireless cameras so that you can transfer images from the camera to the drive directly as they are shot.

Just like the Seagate Wireless Plus 2TB, the WD My Passport Wireless drive broadcasts its own wireless network that allows up to eight devices to connect at the same time and access any content stored on the drive. The portable wireless drive features Wireless N with MIMO technology for enhanced wireless performance so that users can access and transfer files quickly, as well as stream up to four HD videos simultaneously. It comes in the 500GB, 1TB and 2TB specifications although for the Indian market, we will likely not see the 2TB variant as its pricing hasn’t been listed.

Since it has to stream wirelessly, it houses a dedicated battery inside as well. WD hasn’t mentioned the capacity of the battery, but it claims that you can do six hours of continuous streaming and 20 hours of standby power. The drives will start selling from October end.
