The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Warner Bros. has nabbed the film rights to the Monsterpocalypse board game. Evil Dead director Fede Alvarez is attached to direct the film and he will also co-write the script with Rodo Sayagues.

Originally created by Privateer Press, the game is described as a “fast-moving, action-packed strategy game played with high-quality pre-painted miniatures portraying the most fearsome giant monsters on Earth.”

The game mostly pits smaller units against each other but when two of the giant monsters fight, the results are devastating. Some of the monsters in the game range from giant Apes and dinosaurs to Cthulhu like beings and subterranean beasts. One of the game’s many expansion packs even brought in the giant robot Voltron to the fight.

The Monsterpocalypse board game was previously up for an adaptation in 2010 with Tim Burton attached to direct. The film retreated into the ocean when Guillermo del Toro’s own “robots versus monsters” movie Pacific Rim began development. THR reports that Alvarez’s adaptation of the game is “substantially different” from both the previous attempt at adaptation as well as Pacific Rim, while still being a “humans versus monsters” story.
