Verizon Wireless recently announced FamilyBase, a new online tool that can be used by account holders to maintain some control over the lines associated with their account.

Verizon is pitching the service to parents who want to restrict or limit their children’s use of smartphones. The service can be used to monitor and limit calling, texting, app use/purchases, as well as set time restrictions, and manage contact lists. FamilyBase can also let account holders remotely lock a phone.

FamilyBase costs $5 per month and covers up to 10 lines. It is compatible with Android smartphones, but not BlackBerries, the iPhone, or Windows Phone.
