Verizon Wireless today announced the Mobile Unified Communications Client, a new tool that businesses can use to simplify their employees’ telephony needs.

The application works expressly with Android smartphones and allows employees to access both their personal cell phone number and desktop office phone number from their smartphone. Using the app, employees can make and answer phone calls from their office desktop number when out of the office. Calls made from the mobile phone’s business identity are sent through the businesses IP PBX system and will display the employee’s business number to callers.

The service requires the on-device application, as well as a compatible IP PBX back-end. It is initially available to the Motorola Droid X, Droid X2, Droid 2, Droid 2 Global and the Droid Pro. Verizon said it will support other devices/manufacturers soon. The Mobile Unified Communications Client costs $7 per user per month.
