Amazon has posted a new version of the Kindle iOS app, v3.5. The main change in the update is the expansion of X-Ray, a feature that lets readers scrutinize background information in a book. The iOS app previously limited X-Ray to textbooks, but now supports all genres. In a novel, for instance, readers can look up places, characters, and phrases.
Where needed information is sourced from Wikipedia and Shelfari. X-Ray was initially developed for the dedicated Kindle hardware, which is still where Amazon is focusing development. X-Ray on the Kindle Fire was recently extended to support video, offering up details like movie casting.
Also new in Kindle for iOS is improved manga image rendering. The title is a universal iPhone/iPad app, and requires iOS 5.0 or later.
