Tokyo 42 developed by independent studio Smac Games, is coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC in 2017, publisher Mode 7 games announced.
The game offers an open world single-player mode with a story and “lots of side-quests,” plus a competitive arena-based multiplayer component. You play as a character drawn into the world of assassins and explore an “intensely condensed” future Tokyo. You’ll take on missions from terminals and “handlers,” building up your funds and underworld reputation as you progress.
Mode 7 describes it as an ‘action game to its core,’ adding that “every bullet and grenade has full physics, enabling you to dodge and weave.” You’ll pick up pistols, machine guns, sniper rifles, katanas, and other weapons, while “jumping and rotating the camera” to gain access to new parts of the world.
Stealth will also play a role in the game, which you’ll use to sneak into gang strongholds, leap from buildings, or snipe enemies from midair. You can change your skin to blend in with the crowd and shake off enemy assassins sent to kill you, as well as to infiltrate enemy groups. In the multiplayer Arena Mode, you and your opponent spawn into a small area, unaware of each other’s location, and must try to act nonchalantly as part of the crowd as you move around collecting weapons.
