thordarkworldopeningMarvel Studios’ anticipated sequel Thor: The Dark World, starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins and Christopher Eccleston, opened on Thursday night in 3,841 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D theaters across North America, and after grossing $7.1 million in preview and midnight screenings, it has reportedly brought in $31.6 million on its opening day (including those previews).

It’s hard to determine at this time how frontloaded the movie might be, being a sequel to a popular Marvel Studios character, but it’s likely to take in somewhere between $80 and 85 million over the weekend, depending on how much family business it brings in on Saturday and Sunday.

By comparison, the original Thor made $25.5 million its opening day in May 2011 on its way to a $65.7 million opening weekend.
