More than three decades after the original feature film was released in theaters, The Last Starfighter is coming back, this time to television. Variety reports today that Surreal.tv is teaming with The Last Starfighter screenwriter Jonathan Betuel for a new show that will be titled “The Starfighter Chronicles.”

Directed by Nick Castle, The Last Starfighter was released in 1984 and stars Lance Guest as Alex Rogan, a teenage boy who, because of his exceptional skill at video games, is recruited by an intergalactic fleet, the Star League, to help defend the galaxy against the evil forces of Xur and his Kodan Aramada.

Per the outlet, “The Starfighter Chronicles” will drop the film’s video game recruitment angle and will instead focus on intergalactic law enforcement, presumably on the part of the Star League.

As much as the original film was an early adopter of CGI technology, the new show is aiming to push the technological envelope and plans to feature additional entertainment opportunities for fans with virtual reality headsets. Surreal.tv‘s cofounders Rick Rey and Andy Vick have quite a bit of prior experience trying to develop VR entertainment, so it will be interesting to see how “The Starfighter Chronicles” develop.
