The Thunderbolts Strike Back In Marvel’s Standoff Event

ThunderboltsThe dark clouds gather. Lightning flashes. A loud crack shakes your chest. Just like that, the Thunderbolts have come back, shepherded back to the forefront of the Marvel Universe by writer Jim Zub and artist Jon Malin. Moonstone, the Fixer, Atlas, and MACH-V stand together once more. But one should not confuse the familiar for the same. For one thing, the team finds itself with a mysterious added member, plus a new leader, the Winter Soldier.

That said, the creators remain very committed to what they characterize as the heart of what makes the team and the book work, a subect they recently discussed in an interview on Marvel’s website.

“Super villains looking for redemption I think is the ultimate strength and heart of Thunderbolts and sets it apart from everything out there,” argues Malin. “These characters have done very bad things—willingly. No one mind controlled them, they made choices of their own free will and that can never be fully taken back. That motivates me beyond belief to tell this story.”

“We all look for redemption in one form or another, this is universal and that’s the appeal,” he continues. “Also the lesson of be careful who you trust because when you need them the most they might not be the person you thought they were. They may, in fact, be the one putting the knife in your back, willingly and without hesitation.”

“Doing the right thing is different than being ‘good,’” Zub elaborates. “We’ve assembled a potent mix of characters to explore that theme with big drama, big action, and unexpected twists along the way. The new team is stacked with powerful personalities and a mission that’s going to tear them up and get right to their core. I’m excited about putting them in tough spots and letting the sparks fly.”

Beyond the undeniable hook of the characters and themes, the creators find themselves inspired by each other as well.

“Jon’s line work is bursting with excitement and intensity but never at the expense of solid panel-to-panel storytelling,” observes Zub. “It’s a great balance of dynamic action and fine line detail. I think he’s on the cusp of breaking through as a major talent at Marvel and I’m thrilled to collaborate with him on THUNDERBOLTS. I can’t wait for people to see what he’s capable of.”

“I think we’re both coming at this as creating something compelling and meaningful,” the artist returns praise. “Nothing inspires me more than working on something meaningful and Jim can make that happen.”

In addition to boosting one another, the duo think their work will inspire fans to fall in love with the team they hate to love and love to hate all over again.

“I’m a super hero guy above all else and I love the darker stories,” Malin asserts. “Playing with mood and heavy action is my strength.”

“Threats no one else is ready for,” Zub promises. “Hard choices no one else wants to make. Sacrifices no one else dares. The Thunderbolts tackle it head-on and they’ll have the scars to prove it.”

Look for the seeds of the new THUNDERBOLTS series in the upcoming Standoff! event!
