The BBC has released the first trailer for BBC One and Amazon’s new three-part darkly comic political thriller mini-series A Very English Scandal starring Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw.
Stephen Frears (The Queen) helms and Russell T Davies (Queer as Folk) pens the somewhat bizarre 1960s-set true story which follows the story of UK Liberal Party leader and serious Prime Ministerial candidate Jeremy Thorpe (Grant).
Thorpe was tried, but acquitted, of conspiring to murder his ex-lover Norman Scott (Whishaw) – the most serious charges ever levelled against a member of the House of Commons. To help in the killing he hired an amateur dog-phobic hitman named ‘Chicken Brain’ who was allegedly paid for with party funds.
As one of the lawyers so aptly describes in the trailer – “this is the story of a liar meeting a fantasist… but I’m not sure which one’s which.” Alex Jennings, Patricia Hodge, Monica Dolan, Adrian Scarborough, Jason Watkins, Eve Myles, Michele Dotrice and Blake Harrison co-star in the mini-series which premieres soon.
