Texas Instruments to Lay Off 1,700

Texas Instruments today announced plans to reduce its head count by about 1,700 employees. Earlier this year, the company revealed that it would scale back its mobile processor business. Today’s head count reduction is one of the first major steps in executing that plan.

Moving forward, Texas Instruments will focus its OMAP processor business on embedded devices, rather than smartphones and tablets. The company has lost ground in recent years to Qualcomm, Samsung, and NVIDIA.
