MetroPCS, which is owned and operated by T-Mobile, has begun notifying customers in Las Vegas and New England that it will turn off MetroPCS’s legacy CDMA network on July 1.
A landing page on the company’s web site recommends that MetroPCS customers in Las Vegas and New England go to a MetroPCS store to exchange their current handset for one that will work on T-Mobile’s HSPA+/LTE networks instead. Metro warns that customers will need to make the exchange by June 30, as their existing hardware won’t work beginning the first of July.
T-Mobile is offering Metro customers discounts on its handsets, some of which are free. T-Mobile said earlier this year that it would switch off Metro’s network in these markets by the end of the year, but hadn’t provided a firm date. T-Mobile plans to refarm the Metro spectrum for its 4G services.
