T-Mobile is reportedly preparing to force many of its customers to adopt new pricing schemes, putting an end to the grandfathered plans carried by some long-term subscribers. The company is said to be offering significant discounts to affected customers, with contract rates well below the pricing for new customers.
“Maintaining thousands of rate plans is the norm in the industry, but we think it creates unnecessary complexity,” the company wrote in a statement to Engadget. “Simple is better, which is why we’re reducing the number of older plans in our systems. … For the vast majority, their plan will provide similar or better features at a comparable price.”
A HowardForums user reportedly received a notification letter from the carrier, with an offer to switch to an unlimited voice, text and data plan for just $45/month. Other customers with basic plans are said to have received offers starting as low as $20.
The transition is expected to begin in November. Customers who aren’t satisfied with the new rates are said to have the option to end service completely without any penalty or fees, as long as they switch to another carrier before February 21, 2014.
