Synology has added a network-attached-storage (NAS) unit to their lineup, aimed specifically at photographers, pro video and other creative professionals with large storage needs. The 12-bay Disk Station 2411+ can hold up to 36TB of storage (using 3TB disks) and is compatible with an expansion module that offers another 12 bays for a total of 24 drives or 72TB of storage capacity. The unit offers up to 165MB per second write speeds and up to 195MB per second reading.

In addition the usual file-sharing, backups and remote access most NAS drives offer, the DS2411+ also includes a built-in web server capable of hosting up to 30 sites at once (with PHP/MySQL support), with the option of an add-on e-mail server. Remote access has been enhanced with free companion apps for iOS and Android mobile devices, making it easy for admins and users to get either status or files on the go. The unit also includes desktop software for managing the hybrid RAID array, offering the option of redundant drives and supporting mixed-size SATA drives.

The DS2411+ is VMWare, Citrix and Hyper-V compliant, and features two LAN connections with failover and link aggregation support. In addition, the unit is iSCSI-ready, making it an affordable SAN alternative. It can operate as a surveillance server, or DLNA or iTunes server among other options.

The unit is available now from most major electronics distributors and online resellers, and retails for $1,700 (diskless).
