Super Mario 3D World Posts Low Sales In Japan

Grand_Group_Artwork_-_Super_Mario_3D_WorldBoth Super Mario 3D World and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII  debuted in Japan to low sales figures this month. Media Create (via NeoGAF) lists Lightning Returns, with its 277,000 sales, as outselling Super Mario 3D World, which only made its way up to 99,500 units sold. Meanwhile, Pokemon X/Y crossed 3 million Japanese sales.

This is indicative of declining sales for Square Enix, whose Final Fantasy XIII-2 sold less than half of Final Fantasy XIII’s 1.5 million in their respective opening weeks. By comparison, New Super Mario Bros. U outsold Super Mario 3D World in about the same amount of time, soaring above 200,000 sales in its opening weeks.

Perhaps Lightning Returns will have a stronger opening in North America when it releases on February 11, 2014, and in Europe on February 14.
