Sony Will Sale Own PS3 Wireless Headset With virtual 7.1-channel Support

Sony in the run up to E3 filled a gap in its PS3 add-ons by launching the Wireless Stereo Headset. The padded over-ear headphones give users both personal audio, including virtual 7.1-channel surround, as well as a retractable boom mic for voice chat more comfortable than the usual Bluetooth headset. The design gets an edge over third-party rivals by showing many of its details on-screen during play, with a toggle showing its battery life and the volume instead of having to take off the headset.

To get its audio quality, the headset skips Bluetooth in favor of RF wireless. A USB adapter is needed and bundled in the box to make the connection. Both volume adjustment and a microphone mute are built into the hardware.

Shipments won’t start for some time, as the headset is due to reach stores sometime in September. When it arrives, it should cost $99.99.
