The Vita is still a living platform folks! The space given over to the Vita and its games on store shelves may be tiny, but the library of games continues to grow on the PlayStation Network. If you love RPGs, then you owe it to yourself to pick up a Vita. In Japan, the handheld continues to thrive, with proof of that coming in the form of seven new PS Vita models being launched for just one game.

That game is Square Enix title SaGa: Scarlet Grace, and it’s set for release on December 15.

The SaGa series has been around since 1989 when the first, entitled The Final Fantasy Legend, was released for the Game Boy. Since then, nine games have been released in the series with the last to make it to North America being Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song for the PS2 back in 2005.

Although SaGa games have sold close to 10 million games in total, more recent titles have struggled to reach even half a million units. Minstrel Song sold 450,000, for example. That’s still an impressive sales total, but the tie in with exclusive PS Vita models for Scarlet Grace is clearly a move to reinvigorate interest in the series.

The differences between these seven PS Vita models comes down to color and art on the back of the handhelds. There’s a red Scarlet Grace Edition, two Malevolent God Editions in black and white, two Wild “Setsugetsuka”/Snow Moon Flower Editions in black and white, and two Decisive Battle! Editions in black and white.

It’s unclear whether SaGa: Scarlet Grace will make the journey to Western markets. The series has been criticized in the past for its lack of player direction and experimental gameplay. But seeing as it’s on Vita and how active the platform is with PSN-only game releases, there’s a chance Square Enix will take the time to translate it. We just won’t get the seven PS Vita models to go along with it.
