Just a few days after the press renders leaked, Sony has officially taken the wraps off its newest ‘super mid-range smartphones’. The Xperia C5 Ultra is a large phablet, while the M5 is a more traditional size and shape for a smartphone. Both are aiming to offer almost-flagship specs for a lower price, and will hit store shelves in select markets from the middle of August.

Sony describes the Xperia C5 Ultra as a PROselfie smartphone, meaning it has an epic camera sensor on the front. In fact, the C5 Ultra uses 13MP Exmor RS sensors on both the front and the back, and has an LED flash on either side. Both are capable of shooting HDR images for picture and video, and both have automatic scene recognition to help adjust all the settings while you’re busy trying to take a good shot.

Perhaps most impressive is the almost bezel-free display dominating the front panel. It’s a 6-inch, 1080×1920 resolution IPS display which makes full use of Sony’s Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2 to boost detail and image quality. It’s powered by a 1.7GHz octa-core 64 bit processor with 2GB of RAM, and a battery which claims to offer up to almost 8 hours of video playback.

Like many Xperias, the C5 Ultra is built using a strong aluminum frame. It also comes in three colors: black, white and soft mint (light green).

The M5 is an impressive-sounding smartphone which boasts a 5-inch fullHD, 1080×1920 resolution IPS display. Like the C5 Ultra, it uses Sony’s Mobile BRAVIA engine to boost video and image appearance. It has a 21.5MP rear camera with 4K video recording and has the same 13MP front-facing camera is its bigger sibling. Other specs include a 64-bit 2.0GHz octa-core MediaTek processor with 3GB RAM and a 2,600mAh battery.

Both phones have expandable storage (up to 200GB extra) and will be available in select markets in both single and dual-SIM options from August.
