Sony Discontinues Japanese PSP Sales to Focus on PS Vita

PSPThe PlayStation Portable is being discontinued in Japan later this month after selling more than 80 million units worldwide and coming close to its ten year anniversary. According to an official statement from PlayStation Japan this morning, Sony has halted PSP shipments in the region as part of a push to sell more PS Vita. The company also announced two new retail bundles in Japan.

The PSP first launched in Japan back in December 2004, and several iterations (PSP-2000 in 2007 and the PSP-3000 in 2008) of the hand-held were released over the years until 2009 when Sony released the PSP Go. The PSP Go was discontinued in 2011. The PlayStation Vita launched worldwide in 2012.
