Sony late Sunday announced an update of some of its more important Cyber-shot cameras. The TX200V, WX50, and WX70 all have newer Exmor R CMOS sensors that help them shoot more effectively in low light. The TX200V, despite being the slimmest of the group, has a new very dense 18.2-megapixel sensor that can still minimize noise and can focus in a dark scene in 0.25 seconds, and half as much time in bright lighting.
The same flagship is also Sony’s first non-interchangeable lens camera to shoot 1080p video at 60 frames per second and uses a 3.3-inch OLED touchscreen as its primary input. The thin profile still lets it carry a 5X, 26-130mm equivalent lens with internal zoom action and gives it waterproofing at depths of as low as 16 feet while still offering some dust and temperature resistance.
Choosing the WX50 or WX70 gets a more typical body, a 16.2-megapixel sensor, and only 1080i shooting at 60FPS, but makes up for the difference with extra software and hardware. They have a slightly wider-angle 25-125mm lens and are fast enough to capture 12-megapixel photos in the middle of a video shoot. Both WX models inherit picture filters from the NEX series, such as desaturating all but a primary color.
The differences are slight between the two, with the WX50 having a 2.7-inch regular LCD and traditional button controls while the WX70 goes to a three-inch touchscreen display.
All three are due to ship in March. Picking the TX200V carries a premium with a $500 price, but the WX50 and WX70 cost much less at $200 and $230.
