Sony Announce New VAIO SE and Upgrades Others

Sony in an unusual Sunday launch did a tune-up to the VAIO notebook line. As promised earlier, the 15.5-inch VAIO S is now on sale as the definition of Sony’s new mid-range. Known as the VAIO SE, its focus is on HD content with a 1080p display and dedicated Radeon HD 6630M video.

The design continues to keep a chassis under an inch thick and has the option of the VAIO S’ distinct ‘sheet’ battery to double battery life without jutting out from the back. No cost premium exists for the larger screen as the SE costs the same $1,000 to start as the 13.3-inch version. New options should exist for updated Core i3 through i7 processors.

Also coming are quieter speed updates to the various sizes of the VAIO C and E. All of the budget E-series notebooks now have options of newer Core i5 processors, while the VAIO C can move up to newer Core i7 chips. Desktop replacement-class VAIO F and L notebooks are staying the same in hardware but get Imagination Studio Multimedia Edition for AV editing tools like Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum, Sound Forge, and Acid.

Topping off the upgrades are color options. The VAIO SB can now be outfitted with a red hue, while the VAIO Y ultralight can be had in black along with the more colorful pink and silver choices.
