Rocket League Will Add Crazy Maps in the Future

Rocket League improves upon its predecessor, Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle Cars, in many ways, but its map layouts aren’t especially diverse. That won’t always be the case, as developer Psyonix intends to introduce “crazy different maps” down the line.

Rocket League’s current selection of maps all adhere to the same basic rectangular format; there aren’t any major wrinkles from one to another. SARPBC, on the other hand, played around with map design more. Utopia, which is serving as the inspiration for the first free DLC map for Rocket League, was shaped like a horseshoe; in Rocket League, it takes on the more standard rectangular format.

Psyonix hasn’t yet established how frequently it plans to offer new maps, all of which will be released for free. He admitted the next one “is another standard layout, but some of the ones after that will mix it up a little bit.”

The new Utopia map is expected out as part of a free update coming alongside Rocket League’s first paid DLC, Supersonic Fury. All of this is due out on PS4 and PC sometime in August.

What isn’t coming to the game are power-ups beyond the existing turbo, nor will weapons be added. Hagewood made it clear in July that neither of those things are happening, though Psyonix is considering adding mutators for private matches that will allow players to have a different experience.

Rocket League’s first major post-launch patch was released last week, fixing a number of nagging issues and punishing quitters in ranked games. Meanwhile, Psyonix has revealed the game is headed to other platforms.
