Retrode has revealed the Retrode 2, its latest gaming adapter for Macs, PCs, smartphones and tablets. As the video demo below shows, the device connects to a user’s computer and mounts as an external drive allowing users to access game ROMs and game saves on SNES and Genesis cartridges over USB. Users must download and install their own choice of emulator to get up and running.

Once an emulator is installed, users simply point the emulator to one of the ROM images and the games will launch and play just as they did on their original hardware without needing to install additional drivers. Games are controlled by compatible joysticks or gamepads, which are connected to the Retrode 2 which has two available controller ports. The cartridge slots on the device are compatible with Sega’s Genesis and Mega Drive titles, and Nintendo’s Super Nintendo Entertainment System titles.

The Retrode 2 will ship from January 23 for $85 plus shipping
