Piriform has released an initial Mac beta of CCleaner. Long a popular Windows tool, the software is currently missing some features in early Mac form. It nevertheless handles the primary function of scanning for and deleting unwanted files, which can clear up drive space and improve local security.

On a basic level the app will empty out the Trash and scrub files from temporary folders. For web browsers it can be used to delete caches, cookies, and browsing and download histories. Firefox users have the additional option of deleting saved form data. To run CCleaner, users check off which files they want to manage before hitting Analyze and later Clean.

Safari and Firefox are the only supported Mac browsers so far, and in fact the only targetable applications after Mac OS X itself. More software should be supported in the future. CCleaner is a free download.
