Olympus has launched an update to the Stylus SH-1 it revealed last year, with relatively few changes. The Stylus SH-2 compact camera has the same classic retro stylings as its predecessor, as well as a similar 16-megapixel sensor combined with the TruePic VII image processor and a 24x optical zoom providing a 35mm equivalent of 25mm to 600mm, but this time Olympus has added more functions related to night photography.

Once again borrowing the five-axis image stabilization system from the OM-D E-M1, the SH-2 has an ISO range between 125 and 6,400, a shutter speed between 1 /2,000 of a second and 30 seconds, contrast detection autofocus with face detection and spot AF,and an 11.5fps burst mode for up to 16 images. Video extends to 1080 60p, with lower resolutions used for its 120fps and 240fps high-speed shooting modes, while a time lapse movie compresses up to five hours of video into 20 seconds.

The new Nightscape mode can be used to take long-exposure shots of various nighttime subjects, such as star trails, cityscapes, and other night scenes. The Night Scene mode uses an extended shutter speed to capture more light, Fireworks mode offers high-contrast images, Night + Portrait captures flash-illuminated portraits while countering for dim backgrounds, and the Live Composite and Hand-Held Starlight modes can combine a sequence of shots into one larger image. When recording a movie in Nightscape Mode, the camera uses a gradation optimized for darker scenes, to capture detail in low-light situations.

Packed into a compact aluminum alloy frame, with silver and black finishes, the SH-2 also has a rear 3-inch 460k-dot touchscreen. Wirelessly connecting the camera to a smartphone is also possible, with a QR code shown on the rear display to initiate the Wi-Fi connection, with iOS and Android devices able to remotely shoot and transfer photographs and video for quick sharing on social networks.

Shipping in April in the United States, the Olympus Stylus SH-2 is expected to cost $400.
