Nintendo Outlines Paid DLC Plans for Wii U and 3DS

Nintendo is working on a paid item transaction system to handle premium DLC for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, CEO Satoru Iwata revealed to investors.

The system to enable the sale of premium DLC will be made available to developers by the end of 2011.

Regarding Nintendo’s use of paid for DLC, Iwata and Shigeru Miyamoto said they want to extend the life of their games with added stages and features, but won’t be offering low quality DLC – unlock keys, stat increases – for fear of damaging its relationship with consumers.

Iwata also ruled out the free-to-play games which gamers can play for free, but are charged for item purchases. The CEO feels this would damage the premium value of Nintendo’s content.

Last week Nintendo announced a global 3D price drop, which comes into effect next week.
