New Nintendo Direct Broadcast Announced for March 8

There’s another Nintendo Direct coming our way tomorrow, bringing with it a wave of speculation, at least until Nintendo airs the thing at 2PM PST. Nintendo Directs are strange creatures: sometimes they’re relatively uninteresting and sometimes they’re bombshells — it’s the guessing that keeps us on the hook.

From the 3DS camp we’ll likely see something about Detective Pikachu, out soon, and maybe something else as well.

The one thing we know we’ll be getting is Mario Tennis Aces, the latest in a series that’s seen some notable ups and downs over the course of its lifetime, but has me excited nonetheless. Aces will feature a fleshed-out single-player campaign that appears to feature what look an awful lot like boss battles that you fight with ball and racket. That’s what I’d expect to hear the most about tomorrow, but at its best Mario Tennis can make up one excellent local multiplayer title, which just so happens to be what the Nintendo Switch excels at. At the very least, we should expect a release date on this.

Other than that, it’s hard to be sure. The upcoming Yoshi game has been announced for this year with little more than a vague trailer, so I wouldn’t be surprised to get a little more detail on that. Same goes for Fire Emblem for the Switch, another title we know is coming but don’t know a whole lot about. We may also see more details on Labo, though Nintendo has already shared a fair amount of what the cardboard peripheral system will entail.

Other than it’s anyone’s guess. Some Nintendo Directs go by without any significant revelations, but every once in a while something big shows up when you least expect it. In that spirit, my longshot, probably-not-going-to-happen hope would be something to do with Pokémon for the Switch, which we don’t yet know won’t come out this year. Another major hope would be a new Super Smash Bros., but I’m not holding my breath on either.
