Broadcom today announced a new system-on-a-chip that supports all of the wireless charging standards, including the Alliance for Wireless Power, the Power Matters Alliance, and the Wireless Power Consortium.

The multi-standard smartphone power management unit (PMU) works automatically with all the standards, allowing device makers to support them all in a single piece of hardware. According to Broadcom, the BCM59350 is efficient; supports up to 7.5W for faster charge time; includes NFC; and is inexpensive.

The BCM59350 is already sampling to select customers and will reach volume production later this year. In February, the joined together and together use the Rezence brand name. With the PMA and A4WP efforts combined, the Wireless Power Consortium and its Qi standard stand alone. Each uses magnetic induction to pass an electrical charge from a pad to a properly-equipped device.

Variations in the standards prevent a Rezence-compliant device, for example, from charging on a Qi-based pad and vice versa. The new chip from Broadcom will solve that issue until the industry settles on a single standard.
