In their newest issue, Entertainment Weekly reveals that next (almost this) year’s Daredevil Netflix series will be the “exact opposite” of the 2003 20th Century Fox-Ben Affleck feature, according to showrunner Steven S. DeKnight, although DeKnight doesn’t quite say how.

He did reveal that the series will retain the classic comic book origin, and that it’s more influenced by 1970s “mean-street” films like The French Connection and Taxi Driver than “traditional superhero titles.”

Marvel Studios got a lot of positive mileage after similarly comparing April’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier to 70s political thrillers like Three Days of the Condor.

“There aren’t going to be people flying through the sky; there are no magic hammers,” added Marvel TV chief Jeph Loeb of Daredevil. “We’ve always approached this as a crime drama first, superhero show second.”

“It’s a little grittier and edgier than Marvel has gone before, but we’re not looking to push it to extreme violence or gratuitous nudity,” said DeKnight, who as former executive producer for Starz’s Spartacus series.

EW also revealed despite the early images of DD in a simple black costume inspired by Frank Miller’s Daredevil: Man Without Fear, Matt Murdock will eventually get his classic red costume.

No word yet on whether it’ll be the exact opposite of shiny red leather
